Toward Abolition: Poetry as Spellcasting

  • Goethe Institut 170 Beacon Street Boston, MA, 02116 United States (map)

Boston Book Festival Workshop

Join me and fellow poet Jane Wong for a workshop exploring how we might use poetry to put our energies and attention behind abolition work happening across the country, in our community, and within ourselves.

In Poetry as Spellcasting, we write: “We write in the lineage of various anticolonial histories that activate the spiritual, the lyrical, and the mystic in order to demystify the brutality of current conditions and to intercede and to intervene….Rooted in this lineage, we believe we can use a poem as an activating ritual that helps us attend more deeply to ourselves, our communities, and our planet. To summon, to cast, a new world into being.” In this generative workshop, participants will practice poetry as spellcasting to intercede and intervene in social justice struggles. Through individual and collective writing prompts, we will focus our spiritual and lyrical attention on local and national prison abolition organizing. We will conclude the workshop with a supportive, collective ritual toward manifesting liberation.
